A ‘live’ travel map with open source mapping tools

Usually on this blog we include code and instructions from projects of our own. But in this case we wanted to bring your attention to an interesting and fun live travel map, created by Bjørn Sandvik, that makes use of some of our favorite mapping and charting tools. The tools include CartoDB (for live data syncing), Leaflet for mapping and Highcharts for an elevation profile chart.

Bjørn will be hiking from Oslo to Bergen (in Norway) — a trip that, according to Google, will be more than 400 kilometers. His location is tracked via GPS and he keeps the map updated with photos and other data.

You can visit his map here. It’s not in English, but be sure to click on the tabs to see the photos, elevation profile and other details.
